Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system. If it’s old, it may lack modern safety protection — and it can struggle with the demands of today’s appliances, heat pumps and EV chargers. Here’s how to tell if it’s time for an upgrade.

Warning signs to watch for

Ceramic fuses

Old fuse boxes lack modern safety features.

No RCD protection

RCDs protect against electric shock.

Frequent tripping

A sign your board is overloaded.

Adding big loads

Heat pumps and EV chargers add demand.

Why it matters

Modern switchboards include RCDs (residual current devices) that cut power in a fraction of a second if they detect a fault — protecting your family from electric shock and reducing fire risk. If your board still uses ceramic fuses, it likely predates these protections.

What an upgrade involves

We inspect your existing setup, then replace the board with a modern unit with RCD protection sized for your home. Most upgrades are completed in a day, with power off only briefly. On completion we provide the appropriate certification.

If you’re adding a heat pump, EV charger or doing a renovation, upgrading the switchboard at the same time is often the smart, cost-effective move.

Age of your board

Ceramic fuses = time to upgrade.

RCD protection

Essential modern safety.

New appliances

Big loads may need capacity.

Certification

Provided on completion.
